Shawna Cunningham



Shawna Marie Cunningham is one of the course authors and current tutor for Athabasca University’s English 308: Native Literature in Canada course. Shawna has taught Aboriginal Literature courses for Mount Royal College, Yellow-head Tribal College, Athabasca University, and the University of Calgary.  Shawna received her Bachelor degree from the University of Lethbridge in 1987, where she majored in Drama and minored in Native American Studies.  In 1995, Shawna was awarded her Master's of Arts Degree at the University of Alberta in Theatre History and Criticism, with a thesis that focused on the aesthetic relationship between oral tradition and the development contemporary Native theatre in Canada.  Shawna is Métis from Alberta - while she was born and raised in Pincher Creek Alberta, the majority of her family is scattered throughout the Edmonton, Lesser Slave Lake, and St. Albert regions.
